Pre-Show Rituals

Featuring Sierra Boggess & School of Rock and The Colbert Show, Lorde, Orlando Bloom, and Kanye West sharing their favorite backstage pre-show rituals! My favorite is drinking hot tea!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Stay Calm

No matter how many times you've performed a song, it's easy to get nervous before a BIG awards show (...like The Tony Awards). Try doing this yoga breathing exercise to lower your heart rate. And if that doesn't work, a good ol' fashioned self-pep talk will help you feel like the GREATEST STAR  (feat. Andrew Rannells & Barbara Streisand).

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Unvoiced Consonants

Listen to Laura Benanti of She Loves Me use the |s| sound in the words "last night" & "nasty" to give her lyrics new meaning! And study the list of unvoiced consonants to give your audition songs more emphasis.

Voiced Consonants

Voiced Consonants ..the things that make you go HMMM!

Feat. Shuffle Along star Audra McDonald and Jimmy Fallon during Yahoo Answers Lounge Singers!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

"Hamilton" audition for the Schulyer Sisters

For Eliza, think Alicia Keys meets Elphaba.

For Angelica, think Nicki Minaj meets Desiree Armfeldt.

For Peggy, think The Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child.

...and practice that rap!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

"Hamilton" Audition for Thomas Jefferson

When auditioning for Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton, think Harold Hill meets Drake. Your audition song should be an R & B or Jazz song with a smooth melody and strong lyrics! And choose your rap wisely...something percussive & fast.

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Tricks to memorizing your song lyrics

Try taping up your sheet music to the wall, mouthing the words silently while you listen to the song, or write the lyrics on index cards!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Diction

In plays and musicals, diction is key so the audience understands what you are saying. In Hamilton, the actors have to use extra diction to say “shot” instead of “sha.” The emphasis on the “T” makes all the difference in the song. Always remember to use those final consonants and finish your lyrics.

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Breathing

Do you have a fall musical performance coming up? How do you breathe while you sing? It's important to remember that when we sing, we need to breathe in and expand our rib cage all the way through to our back.

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Dynamics

Looking for a way to improve your storytelling? Dynamics! Dynamics are musical markings and they tell you how to vary the volume between soft, medium and loud. They will definitely help improve your vocal performance every time!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Lip Trills

Lip trills - the pop quiz of singing! Take a breath, send the breath between your lips, and let them vibrate. If your lips don’t vibrate, it’s probably because they’re too tight, so push the corners of your mouth inwards & exhale!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

High notes in high heels

In Kinky Boots, Billy Porter and the cast sing in heels. Whether you are in heels or sneakers, bend your knees a little while singing. It is harder to breathe when you lock your knees, making it harder to sing.

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Learn how to learn your music

Starting rehearsal for a show? Before learning the pitches, start with the rhythm! Mark up your music with beats to help you remember entrances. When you have to sing the song, you can be prepared and ready to perform!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Harmony

Learning any fun harmonies for your school musical? Harmony adds texture to the soloist's line. Don’t overpower the melody!

Singing Tip of the Week w/ Singing Coach Caroline:

Audition cuts

College audition coming up? Maybe a school musical? In auditions, you only have 16 bars of a song to show your stuff. Don’t waste your time by singing a song with repeated lyrics, but choose an audition cut that tells a story, has a unique character, and makes the most out of that 16 bar audition.
